Switching into AI
Break into AI without paying tuition
A curated path for career switchers: paid residencies and fellowships that hire you to learn, founder programs that back people before they have a company, and the free courses with reputations earned over years. Every entry was checked for cost first. Paid bootcamps did not make the list.

Paid residencies & fellowships
Programs that pay you while you switch. Competitive, but they are jobs and research posts, not tuition bills.
OpenAI Residency
Six months as a full-time OpenAI employee at about $18,300 a month, embedded in a research team in San Francisco. Built for people coming from math, physics, engineering or self-taught paths, not for career ML researchers.
Fellowship · PaidAnthropic Fellows Program
Four months of full-time research with an Anthropic mentor, a weekly stipend of $3,850 and around $15k a month in compute funding. Rolling applications; fellows work in Berkeley or London and aim to publish.
Residency · PaidApple AIML Residency
A one-year, full-time paid residency inside Apple's AI/ML organization, starting each July. For STEM graduates and engineers switching into ML. Applications usually close the December before.
Research apprenticeship · PaidCohere Labs Scholars Program
A remote-first, full-time paid research apprenticeship pairing newcomers with Cohere Labs mentors and large-scale experiments. Deliberately open to people who have not published ML papers yet. Applications expected to reopen in fall 2026.
Apprenticeship · StipendAI Singapore AIAP
Singapore's national apprenticeship: 6 or 9 months full-time on real industry projects, a monthly stipend of SGD 4,000, and over 90% of graduates placed in AI roles within six months. Singapore citizens only.
Founder routes
If the switch you want is into founding, these back people before companies exist. None charges a fee to apply.
Entrepreneur First
EF selects individuals first: a stipend while you find a co-founder and test ideas, then up to $250K of pre-seed investment when a company forms. Cohorts in London, San Francisco, Bangalore and more. Applying is free.
Founder fellowshipSouth Park Commons Founder Fellowship
For people mid-transition who know they want to build but not yet what: $400K upfront for 7%, a guaranteed $600K in the next round, no demo day and no fixed end date. San Francisco, New York, Bangalore.
Free courseYC Startup School
Y Combinator's free online school for founders: a roughly seven-week curriculum plus co-founder matching, drawn from the advice YC partners give their own batches. Completely free.
Free courses worth your time
Self-study routes with reputations earned over years, not marketing. All free; where a paid tier exists, the card says what it actually gates.
